What is a unit rate?
A unit rate is how much you get for exactly one of something — the rate written with a denominator of 1. It answers questions like price per item, miles per hour, or words per minute.
How to find it
- Divide the first quantity by the second.
- The result is the amount per 1 of the second quantity.
Worked examples
- 1.80 for 3 items → 1.80 ÷ 3 = 0.60 per item.
- 176 miles on 8 gallons → 176 ÷ 8 = 22 miles per gallon.
- 30 words in 2.5 minutes → 30 ÷ 2.5 = 12 words per minute, or 30 : 2.5 = 12 : 1.

A rate compares any two quantities; a unit rate rewrites it so the second is 1. Both describe the same relationship — the unit rate is just the standardized, easy-to-compare form.
