What This Tool Does

Paste or type text and every statistic updates as you go: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines, unique words, reading time and speaking time. Alongside those sit readability scores, a keyword density table, a sentence-length distribution, character-limit meters for the places short copy gets truncated, and a writing goal with a progress bar.

Everything runs inside your browser tab. Your text is never uploaded.

Tip: Press "Use sample text" to see the whole dashboard populated at once — including a deliberately over-long sentence, so you can watch the in-editor highlighting do its job.

How to Use It

Type directly into the editor, paste from anywhere, or load a .txt, .md, .docx or .pdf file. The headline counts appear immediately in the panel beside the editor.

Set a target in the Writing goal panel to get a progress bar and a running "to go" figure. Add the platforms you publish to in the Character limits panel and watch the meters as you trim. Switch the keyword table between single words, two-word phrases and three-word phrases, and hide common words to see what your text is actually about.

Sentences of 26 words or more are tinted amber directly in the editor; sentences of 40 or more get a stronger tint. This is the part most counters skip: knowing that your longest sentence runs to 62 words is only useful if you can see which sentence it is.

Need to change how the text is capitalized rather than measure it? The Case Converter shows fourteen cases of the same text at once.

Need to tidy the list itself — sort it, drop duplicates, strip blank lines? Line Tools does all of that in one pass.

Why Vietnamese Counts Differently

Vietnamese writes every syllable as a separate space-delimited unit. Split on spaces and you have counted syllables, not words — the word học sinh (student) is one word occupying two syllables. Most Vietnamese words are in fact multi-syllable, so a space-based count overstates the word total by a wide margin.

That number is still the one you usually want. When a Vietnamese university or newspaper specifies a length, they mean the space-separated count, because that is what every editor reports. So this tool shows exactly that figure — and labels it "syllables", with a note explaining the relationship. The number is useful; calling it something it is not would be careless.

Chinese, Japanese and Korean do not use spaces between words at all, so for those scripts the tool counts characters, which is the conventional unit there.

Which Readability Score To Trust

Six indices are shown for English text, and they disagree with each other on purpose — each weighs sentence length and word complexity differently.

Flesch Reading Ease returns a 0–100 score where higher is easier; general web copy usually aims for 60 or above. Flesch-Kincaid Grade, Gunning Fog, Coleman-Liau, ARI and SMOG all return an approximate US school grade level instead, so a result of 8 means an average eighth-grader should follow it.

Two cautions. First, all six are statistical measures over a body of text: below about 100 words they swing wildly, and the panel labels them as unstable when that is the case. Second, they measure only sentence length, word length and syllable counts. A passage of short words in short sentences that argues something incoherent will score beautifully. Use them to catch prose that has drifted long and dense, not as a verdict on quality.

Character Limits and Where Text Gets Cut

A meta title is generally cut around 60 characters in search results and a meta description around 160. An X post allows 280 characters on a free account. An Instagram bio stops at 150, a caption at 2,200. A LinkedIn post allows 3,000 characters but the feed shows only about 210 before a "see more". A YouTube title is capped at 100. An email subject line is usually clipped near 50 characters on a phone.

These are guides, not guarantees — platforms adjust them, and some vary by account tier. The panel records the date the figures were last checked so you can tell how fresh they are.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Every count, score and keyword table is computed by JavaScript running inside your own browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server at any point, and the page works with your network disconnected once it has loaded. If you leave Autosave on, your text is stored in your browser's own local storage on your device — you can clear it at any time with the Clear button.
Why does this count syllables instead of words for Vietnamese?
Because that is what splitting on spaces actually measures in Vietnamese. Vietnamese writes each syllable as its own space-separated unit, so a naive word count is really a syllable count — the word học sinh is one word written as two syllables. Every other counter reports that number and calls it words. This tool reports the same number, which is also what schools and publishers mean when they ask for a word count, but labels it honestly. Counting true Vietnamese words needs a dictionary, which is outside what a browser tool should pretend to do.
Why are the readability scores hidden for some languages?
Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog, Coleman-Liau, ARI and SMOG were all fitted on English prose and are defined in terms of English syllable counts. Run them on Vietnamese or Chinese and they still produce a number, but that number carries no meaning. Rather than print it anyway, the panel explains why it is absent and points you at the Structure and Sentence length panels, which measure the same underlying things — sentence length, word length, share of long sentences — and work in any language.
Why does my character count differ from Microsoft Word?
This tool counts grapheme clusters, meaning what a reader sees as one character. Vietnamese text copied from a Mac is often stored in decomposed form, where an accented letter is really a base letter plus a separate combining accent — counting raw code units reports two characters for one visible letter. A composed emoji like a family emoji is one character here and several elsewhere. In practice this makes the number closer to what you would count by hand.
What counts as a paragraph?
Any non-empty line. Blank lines separate paragraphs but are not counted as one themselves, and the Lines figure counts every line including the blanks. That matches what you get from pressing Enter in a text box, which is where most text pasted into this tool comes from.
Are the social media character limits guaranteed accurate?
They are editorial figures, and the panel shows the date they were last checked. Platforms change these values without notice and sometimes vary them by account tier or by device, so treat them as a good working guide rather than a contract. The counts themselves are exact; only the ceilings are a judgement call.
Why do some features switch off on very long text?
Three thresholds keep the page responsive, and each one announces itself rather than degrading quietly. Past 50,000 characters, long-sentence highlighting turns off because drawing that much highlighted text behind the editor makes typing stutter. Past 200,000 characters, keyword density waits for you to press Compute. Past 2,000,000 characters, analysis stops entirely. Every basic count stays live below that final ceiling.
